Veliki Tabor Castle is one of the best preserved late medieval and Renaissance castles in continental Croatia. It is a residential, defense and agricultural complex built on a long hilltop amidst the picturesque hills near the town of Desinić. Built by the noble Rattkay family during the 16th century, it stayed in their hands until 1793. The oldest part of the complex is the central fortified building used for dwelling and defense. Later in the 16th century four semicircular towers were built and in the 17th century the rooms near the northern wall were added.
Veliki Tabor is a popular destination and attracts many visitors each year with a wide range of cultural events.
